Barbados: A Caribbean Escape
A Little Time to Slow Down
Saturday, October 31, 2026Sometimes the best trips are the ones you almost don't take.
When I received an invitation to a wedding in Barbados, I didn’t hesitate. I said yes straight away. There would be a small group of us. I love the Caribbean. There is something about the islands that always draws me back. I decided to fly out on my own and have my own space. This turned out to be a lovely setup, giving me the best of both worlds with group fun and time for solo wandering. Off I went to Barbados!
Exploring Bridgetown and Discovering Carlisle Bay
Whenever I visit somewhere new, I like to start with a walking tour. I booked one through Viator and met my guide at Independence Square in Bridgetown.
I was lucky enough to have her all to myself for the two-hour walk. We explored the town while learning about the island's history, from British colonial times to independence.
I recognised so much of the Caribbean atmosphere right away: the vivid tropical flowers, the fruits and veg, the heat, that familiar, easy going pace. While it brought back comfortable memories of home, Barbados certainly had its own distinct character.
After the tour, I continued exploring on foot and discovered Brownes Beach on Carlisle Bay and Savvy.
Honestly, I was blown away. I've seen plenty of beautiful beaches, but this one was something special. The turquoise water and beautiful sandy beach were simply gorgeous.
I spent some time there, relaxing, no timetable, no plans, just me and the sea and a cold beer.
That evening, I headed out for dinner around St Lawrence Gap. While the area is filled with vibrant restaurants, I particularly enjoy eating where the locals go. I ended up pulling up a chair at a small local spot near Dover Beach, enjoying a rum punch and fresh grilled food while chatting with the locals. Their warmth and friendliness made the evening even better.

Would I Recommend Barbados for Mature Travellers?
Absolutely
If you are looking for beautiful beaches, good food, interesting history and a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere, Barbados is certainly worth considering.
My recommendations would be:
- Bridgetown: Take a walking tour and discover the island's history.
- Brownes Beach and Carlisle Bay: Enjoy some of the most beautiful turquoise water.
- Bathsheba: Take the local bus and explore the dramatic east coast.
- Catamaran excursions: Swim with turtles and discover the shipwrecks.
- Oistins Fish Friday: Enjoy local food, music and dancing.
- Harbour Lights: Experience an evening of Caribbean entertainment.
- St Lawrence Gap: A convenient base for restaurants, accommodation and beach access.
Taxis are reliable and easy to arrange for getting around, though costs can add up. The local buses are another good option for exploring independently.

Sometimes You Just Need to Slow Down
I spend quite a lot of time encouraging women to travel independently, discover new places, and not wait for someone else before making plans.
But Barbados reminded me of something equally important.
You don't always need an adventure, a hiking trail or a packed itinerary. Sometimes you just need to sit on a beautiful beach, enjoy good food, have a conversation with a stranger, and soak up the Caribbean sunshine.
That's something I've come to appreciate about travelling as I get older. I love sharing experiences, but I also love having the freedom to do my own thing.
Barbados wasn't about ticking off attractions. It was about slowing down, enjoying life and saying yes to an invitation I nearly turned down.
And I'm so glad I went!
